Epilogue Mission 14

Hector’s Last Candlemas.

On the eve of the New Year the acolytes and the few hundred survivors on the Corpus Impirator gathered in the recently repaired cathedral. They looked out upon the vast deepness of space, and the chaos of the asteroid field. They were trapped in an eye of the storm, surrounded by a sea of anarchic rocks ranging in size from pebbles to boulders as big as drop ships.
Cardinal Hector offered libations unto the Emperor and sought the forgivness for the failings of the flesh, and the blessing of the God Emperor for another year, that he might deliver them from the temptations of the enemy, and that they might serve him with their lives.
Then on the final strike of the cathedral’s bells which marked the arrival of the New Year a remarkable thing happened. Before the acolytes very eyes, suddenly, order arose from the chaos. The seemingly random patterns of motion of the asteroids suddenly lined up forming a colonnade of pillars each half a mile high. How it was possible was beyond explanation.
Talus seizing the moment said “Quickly, we must leave immediately. It is quite possible the coterie are already ahead of us.”
The service had ended; the Cardinal collapsed into the arms of his closest retainers and was taken from the room. Within just five minutes the acolytes were aboard the sacrifice making top speed into the Pillars of Zothrian. What alien perils they might face in the heart of the alien world were unknown to them.
